Regional water situation
Central Finland, Päijät-Häme and Kymenlaakso 14.2.
In the Kymijoki river basin, the water levels of lakes are still higher than the average level of the season in places, especially in the northern parts of the river basin. The flow regulation of Lake Päijänne will be reduced at the weekend to speed up the formation of ice decks in River Kymijoki. According to forecasts, the weather will remain wintry, cool and low in precipitation for a week, so the water levels will also continue declining.
The water level of Lake Päijänne is declining, and the decrease in flow regulation at the weekend will only decelerate the decline slightly. Due to the severe frost and wind, frazil ice may cause problems, as the ice decks on the River Kymijoki melted in places during the mild period. The flow regulation will be increased again next week. In the lower reaches of River Kymijoki in Kuusankoski, the discharge was still around 400 m3/s on Thursday but will decrease for the weekend due to the reduction in flow regulation.
Water levels in the large lakes in the northern part of the river basin, Lake Keitele and Lake Pielavesi-Nilakka, have remained 15–20 cm above the median level of the time period. Water levels continue to decline slowly.
The water levels in lakes have also remained higher than average at the headwaters of the Saarijärvi route. On the Mäntyharju route, water levels have risen slightly above the average in places. The water level of Puula is slightly higher than the seasonal average, and Kissakoski’s flow regulation has reached a level typical of the season.
