Responsible boating

Finland’s numerous lakes, long coastline and fragmented archipelago offer almost unlimited possibilities for boating. A responsible boater shows consideration for both other people and the aquatic and coastal environment.
The coasts and all larger lakes have many public waterways marked on the map. If you have a motorboat, you should stay on these waterways unless you are thoroughly familiar with the water area in question. Learn the rules of boating and comply with them! Get to know the navigation marks and aids to navigation.
Keep an eye out on your surroundings and other waterborne traffic when you are out and about in your boat. Don’t keep your eyes fixed on the navigator display, as this may prevent you from noticing navigation marks and other boats. You should also have a map in your boat in case the navigator fails.
Keep your boat and engine in good working order, as a poorly maintained boat is a safety risk. If the engine is not maintained properly, it may leak oil or fuel into the water. Make sure you have the required safety equipment and wear a life jacket.
Keep your speed moderate. Be careful when passing other boats, and stay away from private shoreline properties. Avoid making noise and causing other disturbance. You can replace a small outboard engine with an almost noise-free electric engine. Do not disturb birds’ nests or chicks.
Take particular care when you land on undeveloped shores. Check the map to make sure that going ashore is not prohibited or access to the area restricted. Choose official landing places marked on maps. Only light fires at designated campfire sites, and bring all your rubbish and waste home. Keep your dog on a leash.
