Funding a restoration project

Restoring a lake or river takes a lot of work, and also money. While the costs of restoration projects vary depending on their scale, funding is available to cover some of them.
Small projects, such as mowing reed beds, can mostly be completed by volunteers. If costs are incurred from a project, they can be covered from the assets of the joint property management association of the water area in question or by fund-raising.
An application for a grant for a restoration project can be addressed to the central government, and the Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centres) can advise project implementers on applying for funding. To be eligible for public funding, the project must provide a local self-financing share to cover part of its costs.
Municipalities, regional water management associations, companies, regional Leader groups and fisheries areas can also participate in funding and carrying out restoration projects.
To find out more about lake and river restoration, you can join the national Water Management and Restoration Network. The website of this open collaboration forum contains useful guides to lake and stream restoration.
