Information produced by The Finnish Supervisory Agency

Finnish Supervisory Agency

The new Finnish Supervisory Agency is a multidisciplinary central government authority that began operations on 1 January 2026. All tasks previously carried out by Valvira, as well as the majority of environmental tasks from the Regional State Administrative Agencies and the Centres for Economic Development, Transport and the Environment (ELY Centres), have been transferred to the Finnish Supervisory Agency.

Of the tasks within the Environment and Natural Resources responsibility area of the ELY Centres, the Finnish Supervisory Agency is responsible, among other things, for permitting, guidance, planning and supervisory duties related to environmental protection, nature conservation, land use, construction, water and marine management, permitting and supervision related to water management matters, as well as tasks related to environmental impact assessment.

Development and promotional tasks related to the environment and natural resources will henceforth be handled by the regional Economic Development Centres. The Environmental Customer Service Centre responds to questions related to environmental matters.
