Is your well running dry? Report your observation!

You can report observations of dry wells on the vesi.fi web service. When the water in a well runs dry, this indicates that the groundwater level has dropped.

Wells may dry out following a long heat wave: as rainfall amounts are low, water stores in the ground are not replenished and no new groundwater is formed. When the groundwater level drops, the water in the well also goes down and may run out completely during an extended period of drought.

The groundwater surface is usually at its lowest in late summer, especially if the summer has been dry, and it takes long spells of autumn rain to replenish water stores. In Northern Finland, the groundwater level is often at its lowest in spring after a long winter. While little or no groundwater is formed over the winter, spring and snow melt bring its levels up again.

Wells that obtain their water from a small aquifer and have a low capacity are at a particularly high risk of drying. National groundwater maps do not always show the situation of such small groundwater bodies.

If your well runs dry, report it using the My observations function on vesi.fi map service. The reported observations are posted on the vesi.fi map.
