Become an amateur hydrologist!
Do you live or have a holiday home by water? Is there a lake or sea area that is close to your heart? Would you like to find out and know what is going on in your local waters? The Järvi-meriwiki web service offers a handy tool just for you.
Everyone can become an amateur hydrologist or limnologist, and making observations is exciting and fun. You will also learn more about your local waters and see how they change over time. Your local lake or sea will become an old friend whose well-being you can influence.
Järvi-meriwiki is a handy tool for an amateur scientist. You can use the observation service to save your observations and see the time series they create. How does the lake’s transparency change in each season or develop over the years? What is the pH value of the water compared to other lakes? Is the ice cover starting to break earlier?
All users have access to the data saved on the service. In addition to citizens’ observations, the site contains observations made by the authorities and basic data on all Finnish lakes at minimum one hectare in size. Observations saved on the vesi.fi map service will also be visible on Järvi-meriwiki, and the data on Järvi-meriwiki will similarly come up on vesi.fi maps.
Finding data on Järvi-meriwiki is easy, for instance based on the name of a lake or municipality or by zooming in on the map. The service also contains statistical data concerning Finnish lakes.
This makes Järvi-meriwiki a great data resource on lakes and the sea. Why not become an amateur hydrologist or limnologist and gather data on your local waters!
